Coverage of the data

  1. Home
  2. Coverage of the data

Coverage is uneven by design of the source, and the pages say where.

A force month is either delivered or it is not, and we keep a record of each one. Where a month is absent, the figures say so. A missing force or month is not zero crime. At least one force month arrived without a results file. Those results are unavailable, not zero. Absences move between releases: a force missing one month may be complete in the next, so nothing here is treated as a permanent fact.

Scotland is not covered by a complete set of territorial police records on this site. If you are allowing users to search for locations in Scotland, please make it clear that, since only the British Transport Police provide data for Scotland, crime levels may appear much lower than they really are.

Geography comes from the area codes in the published files. We hold no boundary file and no address file, we do not turn a name prefix into a force area, and we do not join a population estimate to an area whose limits we cannot confirm. Records without a usable area code stay at force level and are counted separately.

This release has no British Transport Police file. Scotland is still not covered by territorial police records, so no Scottish total is published.

Each crime identifier is counted once in September 2025 to August 2026. Republished identifiers: 22,189 which is 0.4% of the window. Above 2 percent, the build stops for review. At least one force month arrived without a results file. Those results are unavailable, not zero.

What you can open

Every figure on this page is tied to the accepted calculation.

What to do next

The two sides of this comparison are not the same universe, so no difference is published. Totals from the Home Office and from the national crime survey cover different things from these published street-level records and are never subtracted from them. Case results published by police and by the courts also stay separate, and results are never ranked across forces.

Open the home page and pick an area.

Limits of these figures

It does not tell you about a street or an address. Published points are moved to a shared location covering at least eight addresses, and this page describes an area.

It does not count everything that happened. These are the records forces recorded and published; for many types of crime, police recorded crime statistics do not provide a reliable measure of levels or trends in crime.

It does not describe Scotland. Only the British Transport Police supply records there, so levels would look far lower than they are, and no Scottish total is published here.

It does not give a figure per resident. Rates stay unpublished until an unrounded population estimate for the exact same area is accepted, so counts and composition are all that appear.

It does not rank forces on results. Published matching of case results ranges from about 19 to 97 percent between forces, which makes a league table of results meaningless.
